Generally called RGU, Robert Gordon University is an open university. It was once an academic institution started to offer basic education to the poor. The educational establishment received its university status in 1992. It is one of two institutions of higher education in Aberdeen, Scotland.Nestled in the south-west of the city, the Garthdee campus is the core campus of the university occupying an area of 23 hectares. All the academic departments of the university are set within this campus. The campus is home to teaching and research activities and is recognized for its contemporary architecture. The university is divided into 11 schools. Each school has a head to supervise and is sub-divided into educational departments.
Apart from academic sections, the university has numerous administrative departments too which support academic and cultural activities. As per the data of the session 2015-16, the enrolment at the university was more than 16,800 students. Out of this, 63% of the students applied for undergraduate programs and 35% for postgraduate courses with 2% enrolled in postgraduate research.
It provides many programs from BSc to Ph.D. in various fields of study, including technology, arts, health care, and business. Moreover, several traditional educational degree programs are provided. Other than this, the university offers distance learning services through its virtual learning capabilities. In addition to this, the university staff members help students to produce outstanding research work.
The university has a students' union that helps the student community and works to enhance the experience of students at the university. The sports department at the campus provides a range of fitness and sports services to students and the general public.
The university has a good reputation when it comes to providing job opportunities for students. Also, it is rated high amongst the universities of the country when it comes to providing employment to graduates or students continuing postgraduation study six months after leaving the university. Also, it maintains a huge alumni network in and around the country. Some of the prominent alumni include Gordon Duthie (musician, singer and songwriter), Maxwell Hutchinson (broadcaster, architect,and guitarist), Ola Gorie (jewellery designer), Eilidh Middleton (equestrian competitor), Hannah Miley (Olympian and swimmer), Frank Chapman (Businessman) and Titi Horsfall (author).
